The word sounds like a problem to be removed. On a production floor it is the opposite: it is the one place that already decides how much the whole plant can ship. That is leverage, if you use it.
You cannot eliminate bottlenecks. You can choose to work with yours.
Every factory has a bottleneck. Improve anywhere else and you get a local win and the same shipping rate. Improve — or simply protect — the bottleneck, and the whole plant moves. That is why it is not a flaw. It is the point of control.
Trying to 'balance' every station so nothing is ever waiting is a losing fight. Variation will always create a weakest point. The practical move is to find that point, exploit it fully, and make every other decision subordinate to it. Drum, buffer, rope: the bottleneck sets the beat, a buffer keeps it fed, and a rope stops the rest of the floor from releasing work faster than that beat.
